Kerosene stove

We have a stand alone kerosene stove which I today brought into my study room. I had been using kerosene stoves with built in fan heaters, but thought that the stand alone stove might be quieter.

Indeed, it is quieter and creates a very even heat in te room. In contrast to the fan stove, the old fashioned stove takes time to heat the space. Over time though, the room becomes warm from ‘within’.

I have noticed how different heating sources create very different kinds of heating sensations. Our living room uses a wood burning stove, which is by far the nicest kind of heat. It is a kind of heat that sinks deep into the walls of the room.

All of these heating methods require considerable maintenance. The kerosene stoves need fuel pumped into them once a week. I use an ingenious battery powered hand pump. The wood stove needs a weekly log stacking session. I suppose that electric heaters of all kinds don’t really need much physical entanglement, just the press of a button. But then the kind of heat sensation they provide tends to be the least cozy.
