A good SEO strategy requires proper keyword research. It helps you understand what terms and phrases people are searching for on search engines.

While keyword research is seen as a time consuming task, there are efficient methods to get it done.

Here’s how you do keyword research in just 5 minutes:

  1. Identify your main topic.
  2. Brainstorm relevant keywords.
  3. Use keyword research tools.
  4. Analyze search volume and competition.
  5. Targeting long tail keywords.
  6. Monitor and refine your keyword.

In this article, I will help you through a simple approach to conducting keyword research. It will give you the fundamentals to improve the quality of your content.

1. Identify Your Main Topic

Actually there are things you have to start with such as understanding your audience and creating buyer personas. But let’s assume you already have a good grasp of these aspects.

Now, it’s time to identify the main topic you want to focus on. This step will help you narrow your keyword choices and target a specific audience.

For example, imagine you own a bakery and want to attract more customers online. Your main topic could be:

  • Delicious treats.
  • Freshly baked bread and pastries.
  • Bakery near Baker Street.

2. Brainstorm Relevant Keywords

Think about the words your target audience might use when searching for information related to your topic. Using my previous example of a bakery blog, relevant keywords could be:

  • 10 Easy Recipes for Delicious Homemade Treats
  • Why Freshly Baked Bread Should Be Your Go-To Treats
  • Incredible Bakery Experience near Baker Street

Note: Now our society has Chat GPT. You can use it to brainstorm ideas quickly. I made the titles list above using Chat GPT and I didn’t forget to give it a personal touch.

3. Use Keyword Research Tools

There are a lot of free tools. One of the most popular is the Google Keyword Planner. It’s free to use and provides data directly from Google.

Just enter your brainstormed keywords and the tool will generate a list of related keywords with their average monthly search volume.

Keyword planner also provides you keyword ideas. Here’s you can see “keyword tool id” also good for me to target because it’s having low competition.

Other tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Moz can also provide comprehensive keyword data and analysis. These tools may require a paid subscription, but they offer advanced features and more in-depth insights.

4. Analyze Search Volume and Competition

Search volume means how many times people search for a keyword every month, and competition shows how hard it is to rank for that keyword.

The best scenario is to focus on keywords with lots of searches but not much competition. These keywords give you a chance to rank higher in search results.

5. Targeting Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases that have lower search volume but higher conversion rates.

Example for short-tail keyword:

The keyword “Car” will lead you to a wide range of topics. Give it a try by typing “Car” on Google. You’ll find a variety of things, such as car photos, Wikipedia about cars, car news, car reviews, car driver and etc.

Example for long-tail keyword:

The keyword “Used car near Baker Street” directs you to a specific topic. The searcher is looking to purchase a used car close to Baker Street. Your goal is to create an article that helps them solve their problem.

The result is predictable. Long tail keyword has high intent and better conversion.

6. Monitor and Refine Your Keyword

SEO is an ongoing process. It’s important to monitor keywords performance and make adjustments as needed.

Pay attention on your blog analytics to track the organic traffic and rankings. If you find that certain keywords are not performing well, try replacing them with more relevant keywords.

Regularly refining your keyword strategy based on data. It will help you optimize your content for maximum visibility.
