NEW YEAR by Sumantra Chaudhury

New Year

Oh, the date changes again…

Or is it the turn of fate…

Yet again as the numbers roll…

Time runs… damn! I am already late.

The clock ticks… the chair rocks…

Anxious…the notebook I flip in haste

Days ’n’ events scribbled randomly…

I missed all… what a waste.

From the windows, I peer…

Lights shimmer…loud cheers resonate

My eyes dazzle… dreams float near

I grasp but slip… curse this blasted fate.

The phone beeps… a ray of hope

With joy, I read… yet with a sense of fear.

A tear rolls, the heart beats…

“Start again!” It reads. “It’s a New Year.”
