What do you think of the last few lines, after the “questioning look”? Anatole, once he knows that Pierre won’t physically attack him, goes back on the offensive and claims that Pierre has offended him. Pierre’s response, after a moment of disbelief, is to apologize and offer Anatole money for the move to St. Pete.
I think it shows character for Pierre to let go of his pride and avoid escalating this into another duel. On the other hand, is he giving up too much of himself to appease the selfish and destructive people in his life?
