5-in-5 Day 1
09.01.2018, Manhattan, NY
Duration: 12:00–17:00
Not until recently I started to be more aware when I’m NOT paying attention to others, especially when I get a email or a message on my phone while someone’s talking, I always apologize. It wasn’t a big problem for me before, but I just started to become more self-conscious about it.
Today I’m on my way to meet a friend for lunch and we planned to just hang out afterwards since I’m watching her cat for couple of days… Since we will be having “intense” one-on-one interaction, I want to see how many times will I look at my phone, while I’m with someone.

I carried my notebook all day long, and had told my friend I will be logging in every time I check my phone. However the problem with that is , I started to try to avoid the urge of just to reach for my phone. To be honest, this is probably not very accurate.
HOWEVER, I still managed to check my phone… TOTAL OF 21 TIMES.
(During 7 hour time period, which means 3 times and hour, which mean, once very 20 times!!)
I am kind of shocked how many times I’ve used my phone, especially I definitely tried to unconsciously reaching for it all the time. In order to make this more tangible I decided to visualize it in the following way:
- For every time I check my phone, document it.
- Take the square of every number.
- Use the result as the side of a cube.
- Build every cube
- Manage them in a way where each one has to touch the previous one
Results:

Theme: Human-Human Interactions Vs. Human-Computer Interaction
Methodology:
Record every time Human-Computer Interaction override Human-Human Interaction,
Medium: CAD Modeling
Question: Is there a stronger bond between Human-Computer Interaction? Is it because the interaction itself bring more/is more meaningful? Or is was shaped and integrated into our lives that way it became a unconscious act?
