5-in-5 Day 5
09.05.18
Brooklyn, NY
For the past four days I’ve been observing and collecting data around me, and create relevant projects based on the information I collected. Today I wanted to do something different.
Most of the time it’s not the big hard tragic event that makes life harder, but million small, endless inconveniences that get you — like grocery shopping. Whether you are living by yourself or have 5 kids and 3 dogs, it is impossible to know how much food to buy. In addition, don’t you hate it when you go home almost starve to death, after a long day of work (or lack thereof), facing the empty fridge.
Here is a simple solution almost all of us have used once before: Buy more food when you go grocery shopping.
And that usually leads to: Waste.
So I decided to investigate my fridge and see what I can do with all my food
So here is the simple rule of today:
- Create something (it can be food, a tool, art, whatever you desire), with all the food you have.

Spinach, Celery, Dates, Mooncake, Carrots, Kale

I have no idea what this will turn into..

The results aren’t horrible I guess?
Of course we are not gonna waste all the food, so here is what my master piece turned into:

The result and the aftermath is quite interesting to me. If I’m being very honest, I might have thrown half of the ingredients within the next couple of days. Even though I didn’t just make that a cooking project, knowing that I have those food around and actually working with them reminded me in a way that I HAVE them and I CAN USE them. Especially after I had cut them into pieces, it also somehow forced me to use these ingredients to make a dish. If I just keep them in the fridge, I will probably stare at them and decide to not eat or use any of those. It makes me feel obligated and way more guilty if I don’t eat them. The active interaction makes me more aware of their existence, rather then passively knowing I have them which makes it easier to waste them.
