Busy is a Decision! Tribe of Mentors #2

Busy is a Decision

Debbie Millman is the host of the radio show Design matters, along with being a writer, educator and artist!

I really enjoyed her interview in Tribe of Mentors, because I found her very open minded, fun and enjoyable to read to!

Just like in the previous post of the Tribe of Mentors series, failure, again plays an important role in the life of these high performers.

“The worst professional experience I’ve faced became the most important, defining experience of my life.”
— Debbie Millman

Debbie also believes that not having time for something is simply an excuse. You’re the one deciding to which things you say yes or no. You’re the one defining your priorities. The excuse of ‘not having time’ is simply “the most inauthentic.”

“You don’t find the time to do something; you make the time to do things.”
— Debbie Millman

Busy is a decision! Chose your priorities well. And if you find you’re not having time to do the things you enjoy and find the most important, rethink your life and calendar!

Debbie reinforces the importance of practising in order to get better, which is something I truly believe and focus on daily!

“Confidence is achieved through repeated success at any endeavor. The more you practise doing something, the better you will get at it and your confidence will grow over time.”
— Debbie Millman

Here are 3 of the 5 questions that Debbie encourage their students to ask themselves:

  1. Am I constantly refining and improving my skills? What can I continue to get better and more competitive at?
  2. Do I believe that I am working harder than everyone else? If not, what else can I be doing?
  3. Am I doing everything I can — every single day — to stay in “career shape”? If not, what else should I be doing?

The first one, for me, plays an important role in my life. Because I’m passionate about learning and improving my skills!

To end this post:

“If you are doing something you love, you don’t want work-life balance.”
— Debbie Millman
