Are you a fan of Shah Rukh Khan and spy thrillers? If yes, then you might be interested in watching Pathan, the latest movie in the YRF Spy Universe. Pathan is an action-packed movie that stars Shah Rukh Khan as an ex-army man turned undercover agent, Deepika Padukone as his ex-ISI partner and John Abraham as his arch nemesis. The movie is directed by Siddharth Anand, who previously helmed War and Bang Bang.
Pathan was released on 25 January 2023 and has been creating a lot of buzz among the fans and critics alike. The movie is also Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback after four years of hiatus from the big screen. But is Pathan worth watching? What are the reviews, ratings and box office collection of the movie? In this blog post, I will answer these questions and give you my honest and unbiased opinion on Pathan. So, let’s get started!
Review
Pathan follows Pathan’s mission to stop Jim, an ex-RAW agent who has gone rogue and joined forces with a Pakistani officer who wants to avenge India’s revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Jim has acquired a biological weapon of mass destruction and plans to unleash it on India. Pathan teams up with Rubai, an ex-ISI agent who has ambiguous motives, and travels across the world to stop Jim’s nefarious plot.
Pathan is an ambitious action thriller that plays to the gallery and lives up to the hype. It is an event film that showcases Shah Rukh Khan’s charisma and action prowess. He performs death and gravity-defying stunts on cars, bikes, ice and helicopters. He is also joined by Salman Khan in a cameo appearance as Tiger, another hero from the spy universe.
However, Pathaan is also far-fetched in writing and subpar in VFX. It gives an over-the-top treatment to its spy thriller genre, presenting it more like a superhero film that needs massive suspension of disbelief. The plot is daft, cliché and illogical, with exaggerated action and chase sequences, immortal heroes and villains mouthing punchy dialogues, a femme fatale and all of this seeped in the idea of patriotism. The background score doesn’t quite feel in sync with the scenarios, and the music by Vishal & Shekhar is average at best.
Here are some of the things that I liked and disliked about Pathaan:
- What I liked:
- Shah Rukh Khan’s screen presence and performance
- The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone
- The cameo appearance of Salman Khan as Tiger
- The globetrotting locations and cinematography
- The entertaining and engaging factor
- What I disliked:
- The weak plot and screenplay
- The cliché and cheesy dialogues
- The subpar VFX and editing
- The unrealistic and illogical action sequences
- The average music and background score
Overall, Pathan is a movie that you can watch if you are looking for a mindless masala potboiler that showcases Shah Rukh Khan’s charisma and action prowess. It is not a movie that you can watch if you are looking for a realistic or intelligent spy thriller that makes sense. It is an entertaining globetrotting spy caper that’s massy, messy and outlandish.
