Kakafukaka is a Japanese drama consisting of 10 25-minute episodes. Aki Terada had a crisis wherein she caught her live-in boyfriend cheating on her. With that, she needed to find another place to live with her small budget. She ended up in a sharehouse with 3 other people, where her life turned grey and colorful.

She did not know that an ex-boyfriend also lived in the sharehouse. Hongyo Tomoya, a novelist, is a cold and mysterious person with a problem. He has had erectile dysfunction for 2 years which disturbs him from writing his next novel. Here’s the catch, it reacts to Aki Terada. And so, a sleeping-together plan happened between them until feelings were involved. The owner who also lives in the sharehouse, Hase Taichi, needed to get married as soon as possible or else the sharehouse would be taken away from him by his parents. With this dilemma, Hase Taichi asked Aki Terada to get married to him for the reason that she provides for his needs.

The drama is a feel-good series. However, it gets frustrating. The main character is a pushover and her innocence is not that fun to watch. Her settling for the bare minimum and pushing away the person that makes her feel important makes me roll my eyes. How can you like someone who takes advantage and manipulates you? Well, in love people are mostly blinded by the red flags even if it’s painfully visible.

I thought the ending was going to be a sad one but alas, the main couple always wins in the end. I am glad Hongyo Tomoya finally acknowledged his feelings for Aki Terada albeit not sure about it a hundred percent, but I hope in their universe he takes the time to be a good person or a boyfriend to her. Side note, I thought he is a psychopath for he is so void of emotions and feelings. I think he needs therapy.

The side characters were surprisingly supportive. Kuritani Akari, a bubbly but intimidating person living in the sharehouse who is a huge fan of Hongyo, realized she likes the novelist romantically and wanted to marry him but Aki Terada also likes him. Instead of lashing out, she understood the situation and became good friends with Aki until the end. It was refreshing to watch this scenario in a drama involving love triangles.

The casts did okay. Aoi Morikawa (Aki Terada) acted well in this drama. I loved her smiles and big expressive eyes. Masaki Nakao (Hongyo Tomoya) had minimal acting here because of the character. I did not get to grasp if he is truly a good actor generally because this is the first time I watched a work that involves him nonetheless, he expressed the character well. Kousei Yuki (Hase Taichi) also did well but I think he will be much better as a villain character. He has that vibe where he looked like he is going to do something bad in the next scene. I was waiting for it to happen but it didn’t. The acting of Risa Nakamura (Kuritani Akari) was quite lacking. She was expressive but her mouth never moves at all when she was speaking, it was fascinating to watch.

The drama is a good series to watch when you want to pass the time or when you are looking for something to make you feel giddy. It is definitely easy to watch. I am rating this Japanese drama 6.5 out of 10. A big chunk of the plot was not explained at all and it could have been better if they at least proceeded with a second season to clarify some stuff.
