Mr Cameron you are making a massive mistake on fracking.
So David Cameron has declared that his government is going “all out” for shale as he announces that councils will be entitled to keep 100% of business rates raised from fracking sites in a deal expected to generate millions of pounds for local authorities.
But is he getting his priorities right? While gas will remain an important aspect of our energy mix in the future, and shale gas could replace our rapidly depleting North Sea oil reserves helping promote our energy security, are there not better options available?
Should we not be investing in new technologies, technologies that will give us both a competitive advantage and help us combat global warming, technologies that will create jobs and that we would be able to sell to other countries for a profit. Is this not the future? If the United Kingdom wants to retain its position as a world leader shouldn’t it act like one, especially when its regarding one of the biggest challenges confronting humanity. George Osborne claims that the UK was a pioneer for being the first country to extract oil and gas from the North sea, well I would say now its time to use the same level of innovation and determination to become a pioneer in the clean energy revolution.
