Architecture at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa

The Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa is truly an extraordinary building, without even discussing the exhibits inside! It was built 100 years ago and commissioned by the queen herself. I spent a number of days roaming the halls of this amazing museum, working to take photos of all the details that are so integrated into the building you might not even notice them. It’s a bit like a scavenger hunt.

First Impressions: Exterior Details

From the outside, you can see the new glass portion of the building holding a giant jellyfish balloon (it changes every year). When you stand on the balcony in that area, right next to the hanging jellyfish, you get an amazing view of the city through the glass on all sides!

Also on the outside of the building, each window is decorated with a different animal carving. Plus, all the exquisite and original stained glass pays tribute to different birds, animals and plants in Canada.

Searching out the details

All the stonework, and even the pillars and stained glass, reflect the purpose of the building. You can find animals hiding in the staircase pillars, wall sconces, and ceiling light fixtures. Keep your eyes peeled for the gorgeous details all around this building!
