So I know DIY implies actually doing something, so maybe DIY isn’t the right word for this. You don’t really have to do anything to make this makeup remover, and you probably actually already have it somewhere in your house. Crazy, right?!
I came across this trick for removing my makeup on one of my absolute favorite blogs, Maskcara. I read about it in her email newsletter one day, gave it a whirl, and haven’t looked back. What’s this fabulous, amazing secret, you ask? Get ready. Prepare yourself. It’s …
Coconut oil.
What?! Yes. Friends, coconut oil, the “superfood” we’ve all heard so much about, is good for much more than smoothies and cooking (if you haven’t read my post about the benefits of coconut oil yet, check it out here). As it would turn out, coconut oil is the absolute best makeup remover I’ve ever used.
I’m the kind of person who absolutely needs all-waterproof, all-smudgeproof err’thang. Normal makeup remover, even the “waterproof removing” kind, wouldn’t even begin to touch the mess. Coconut oil, though? Perfection. Every time.
Bonus: It makes your lashes grow like crazy.
Since I’ve started using coconut oil as my makeup remover, my usually short eyelashes have grown considerably. Unfortunately it doesn’t keep them from pointing down (how unfair is that?! My eyelashes are slanted downwards), but they’re long enough now that they stay curled and lovely all day long.
How to Use Coconut Oil as Makeup Remover
This process couldn’t be simpler. All you need to do is take a little dab of coconut oil on your index fingers, close your eyes, and gently rub your closed eyelids and lashline for a hot sec. Take a tissue and gently wipe away the oil, and bam! Perfectly clean eyes, every time.
Tips:
- Use a little oil at a time. If you use too much, your lids can stay oily for a while, which makes it difficult to put on your makeup. If you do this before bed it won’t be an issue, and you’ll wake up very nicely moisturized.
- Keep a tiny tub of regular coconut oil in your makeup bag. I use the fractionated stuff (permanently liquid), and it’s spilled in my bag before. Don’t be like me. Use the solid stuff.
- Coconut oil makes an amazing all-over moisturizer right before bed!
