Dear Procurement Department

I understand that you like to standardise the computers in your business. The ease of maintenance and support is a huge topic, I get that. I also get that costs are always an issue for business. Save where you can etc …

BUT, please bear in mind that a software developer has a completely different set of requirements to the receptionist or the account manger. A poxy little i5 laptop with 8GB of RAM is fine if all you’re doing is writing Word documents and replying to some email. For a developer, you’ve just shot him in the foot and then told him to go dancin’.

Don’t.

Would you employ a gardener and then demand that all they can use is a teaspoon to dig your garden? No, so why do it to your software engineers?

False economy.
