Tips on how to start a successful freelance writing career

I was conversing with a friend who wanted to build a successful writing career. He was eager. I could tell he was ready to make at least $1,000 the following day.

You probably are as eager as my friend if you are just starting. Possibly, the person that gave you an orientation about the writing field only made you see the earning capabilities, without an emphasis on the process.

Here are my tips if you are just starting:

1. Change your paradigm and be open-minded

Many people always think they can write. “I write poems a lot,” “I have a natural flair for this,” bla bla bla. It’s good you can do these already, but if you’re going to do well in this field, you have to be open-minded and willing to learn.

2. Familiarise with the field

Trust me; it would help to waste one or two weeks just reading about anything and everything related to writing. It might be boring, but the information you get will play out in the long run.

3. Follow someone already successful as a writer

People often complain of not knowing what to do or how to make it with writing. To be honest, it’s hard to understand this. There are many resources (free and paid), tutors, and experts willing to help new writers. Moreover, they are everywhere on blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Find one and stay with them.

4. Be active

Passivity kills faster than diseases, pour moi. Nothing is more terrible than not taking action on what requires substantial effort. As you’re learning about tips and strategies, you should take immediate steps and act even if it doesn’t seem to make sense.

5. Don’t forget the skills

You don’t want to spend time following other people and learning how they made a fortune from freelance writing without grooming your writing. Develop it to the point that no one can match your skill. That itself is priceless.

6. Dream big

Don’t play small. Always have lofty dreams about your writing career. Don’t make other people the judge of your life. As you build yourself, you’ll reach a point where you feel your compensation should not be below a certain amount. Don’t knock it off, thinking your clients may run away. They won’t because it’s stressful to find another high-quality writer.

Would you commit these tips to heart? If you do, I guarantee you are on your way to greatness in building a successful and profitable writing career.
