Italian Greyhounds, also commonly referred to as “IG’s”, are an incredibly old breed of dog. This breed is often viewed as a miniature, in comparison to other types of Greyhounds. Miniature Greyhounds have been found depicted in 2000-year-old artifacts, with some small skeletons being found in archeological digs in modern-day Turkey and Greece.
Although the hunting purpose of this breed has been somewhat lost over time, it’s believed that these little dogs served as avid hunting companions. This is perhaps even before being considered a “lap dog” by women in a position of nobility.
It’s believed that by the Middle Ages, this breed has made its way into southern Europe. Here, the breed become beloved amongst the aristocracy, especially in Italy.
