The Knights Templar, also known as the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, were a religious military order established during the Crusades in the 12th century. Their primary mission was to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. However, they soon became a powerful and wealthy organization that played a significant role in European politics and finance.

The Formation of the Knights Templar

In the late 11th century, the Byzantine Empire lost control over Christian holy sites in the Holy Land to Muslim invaders. In response, Pope Urban II called for the capture of these sites, initiating the First Crusade. As European crusaders established Christian states in the region, there arose a need for defense and governance. This led to the formation of the Knights Templar in 1119 or 1120.

Led by Hugh of Payns, a French nobleman, the initial group of Templars consisted of seven knights who took monastic vows to protect pilgrims. They were given quarters in the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, which became their headquarters and lent them their name. Pope Honorius II officially recognized the order in 1129, solidifying their status as a legitimate military order.
