Some people are better than others

What if I was born as completly different person on the other side of the world, with a different family, different enviroment and different everything? I would end up as that other person. Is that person better than me? Complete with their full suite of vices, habits, virtues, weaknesses and beliefs. I would not be me. I would be them. Who is better? If I make a decision, was it up to me, or up to to the circumstances I was placed in?
You can attribute the entirety of a person to luck: the luck of who they were born as, the environment they were placed in and the things they encounter along their lives shaping who they are and will be.
From the Luck point of view, no person is better than another because luck has determined who they are. A person can be viewed as a product of its environment and of the circumstance it was placed in. A person is not responsible for who they are: Luck is.
However, this is depressing. If hold a worldview that luck is the only cause of responsibility, then life becomes meaningless and aimless. For example, my life, my friends, my family, home and acheivements, were not up to me, they are simply destined to happen, due to no input on my behalf. SAD.
To counter this depressing trail of thought: The responsibility of life is what makes it worth living. When we relinquish responsibility to an external force like Fate or Luck, then life looses its fun. It looses its purpose and its passion. There is no need, no DRRIVE to strive. There is no yearning for say, hazelnut icecream on a Saturday night and no desire, in a life solely fated to happen.
In order to live with passion and purpose and risk and pain, we must live with free will. With purpose and with determination. We must beleive that We are the driving force behind who we are. My actions and my decisions make me purely responsible for my fate and my character. My person is defined by me.
“I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul” — ‘Invictus’ by William Earnest Henley
Because I believe I am responsible for myself then my choices might make me better and worse than others. If I believe that the calibre of a person is only determined by luck, then my choices wouldn’t be any better than those of annother person. Because the responsibility of these decisions are carried by fate or luck, then the weight of the decisions are also. These decisions make up calibre of the person. If the deciscion is held up by the free will of the person, then the decisino is a credit to their character.
In order to Survive, and to thrive, we need to believe some people are better than others. It starts from believing in self determination and strong free will. Responsibility for one’s own actions creates risk, beauty and passion in life. It give purpose and humanity.
Whether it exists or not, free will is the key to a life well lived.
