Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios are unquestionably two of the most reputable animation studios in the business. Their films are cultural & ceremonial events time after time.

Let’s take a closer look at the many animated motion pictures and original shorts produced by the two big Disney studios in the past years!

Pixar’s trailer for a short on Bo Peep

January 31, 2020 — Lamp Life (Pixar)

Bo Peep makes a big comeback in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 and she leads the way in Pixar’s all-new animated short film, Lamp Life. Lamp Life answers the question of what happened to Bo since we last we saw her in Toy Story 2. The film airs exclusively on Disney+.

March 6, 2020 — Onward (Pixar)

Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney and Pixar’s Onward introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there.

Onward’s all-star cast includes the talents of Tom Holland as Ian Lightfoot, Chris Pratt as Barley Lightfoot, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Laurel Lightfoot and Octavia Spencer as “Corey” The Manticore.

Directed and written by Dan Scanlon, co-written by Jason Headley & Keith Bunin and produced by Kori Rae, Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” was nominated for ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ at the 2021 Academy Awards.

December 25, 2020 — Soul (Pixar)

What is it that makes you…YOU? Soul introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) — a middle-school band teacher who has a passion for jazz. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before — a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth.

Other cast members feature Tina Fey as 22, Graham Norton as Moonwind, Rachel House as Terry, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Wes Studi, Fortune Feimster, and Zenobia Shroff as the five soul counselors in the Great Before, Phylicia Rashad as Libba Gardner, Donnell Rawlings as Dez, Questlove as Lamont “Curley” Baker and Angela Bassett as Dorothea Williams.

Directed and written by Pete Docter, co-written by Mike Jones & Kemp Powers and produced by Dana Leigh Murray, Disney and Pixar’s “Soul” won ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ at the 2021 Academy Awards.

March 5, 2021 — Raya and The Last Dragon (Walt Disney Animation Studios)

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than dragon magic to save the world — it’s going to take trust as well.

April 30, 2021 — 22 vs. Earth (Pixar)

Set before the events of Disney and Pixar’s Oscar®-winning feature film “Soul,” 22 refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of 5 other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. However, as her cohorts’ activities lead to unexpected results, 22’s subversive plot may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boyexperiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

The voice cast consists of Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro, Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano, Emma Berman as Giulia Marcovaldo, Saverio Raimondo as Ercole Visconti, Maya Rudolph as Daniela Paguro, Marco Barricelli as Massimo Marcovaldo and Jim Gaffigan as Lorenzo Paguro.

Directed by Enrico Casarosa, written by Mike Jones & Jesse Andrews and produced by Andrea Warren , Disney and Pixar’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” has received a nomination at the upcoming Academy Awards for ‘Best Animated Feature Film’.

In the all-new Walt Disney Animation Studios animated short, Far From the Tree, this young raccoon will learn that while there is reason to be fearful, as danger lurks around every corner, it is still possible to live with an open heart.

Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal — every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Disney’s 60th animation film features the voices of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal, María Cecilia Botero as Abuela Alma Madrigal, John Leguizamo as Bruno Madrigal, Mauro Castillo as Félix Madrigal, Jessica Darrow as Luisa Madrigal, Angie Cepeda as Julieta Madrigal, Carolina Gaitán as Pepa Madrigal, Diane Guerrero as Isabela Madrigal and Wilmer Valderrama as Agustín Madrigal.

March 11, 2022 — Turning Red (Pixar)

Growing up is a beast. Check out the upcoming all-new original feature film Turning Red from Pixar Animation Studios’ director Domee Shi, who won an Oscar® for her 2018 short film, “Bao.” Young actress Rosalie Chiang lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS). Sandra Oh voices Mei Lee’s protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter — an unfortunate reality for the teenager.

Directed and written by Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” releases March 11, 2022.

Other cast members include Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya and Hyein Park as Abby; (three of Mei’s friends). Orion Lee also stars as Jin Lee (Mei’s father), Wai Ching Ho as Wu Lee (Mei’s grandmother) and James Hong as Mr. Gao. Julia Cho co-writes.

June 17, 2022 — Lightyear (Pixar)

Lightyear is the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear — the hero who inspired the toy — follows the legendary Space Ranger on an intergalactic adventure. “Buzz’s world was always something I was excited about,” said director Angus MacLane. “In ‘Toy Story,’ there seemed to be this incredible backstory to him being a Space Ranger that’s only touched upon, and I always wanted to explore that world further. So my ‘Lighytear’ pitch was, ‘What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?”

Joining the previously announced Chris Evans, who lends his voice to Buzz, are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules and Taika Waititi as a group of ambitious recruits. Peter Sohn voices Buzz’s robot companion, Sox, and the cast also includes the voices of Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

The Lightyear Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available on June 17, 2022. “Lightyear” is produced by Galyn Susman (“Toy Story That Time Forgot”) and written by Pete Docter, chief creative officer of Pixar.

November 23, 2022 — Strange World (Walt Disney Animation)

Travel past space and time to a place of infinite mystery. Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Guilty,” “Spider-Man: Far from Home”) lends his voice to Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer. The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest — and by far — most crucial mission.

Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”), Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World releases November 23, 2022.

June 16, 2023 — Elemental (Pixar)

Pixar Animation Studios revealed details about its 27th feature film, Elemental, which will release on June 16, 2023.

Directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur, Partly Cloudy short) and produced by Denise Ream (The Good Dinosaur, Cars 2), the film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

November 22, 2023 — Untitled Walt Disney Animation Studios film

Carlos López Estrada has been attached as the director of Disney Animation’s lone 2023 film.

It’s an original movie for Disney Animation, they haven’t announced it yet, so everything is confidential at this point but we know it will come out on 2023, it’s in development and we will start with storyboards, the music and the script in a few months”, said director Carlos López Estrada.

March 1, 2024 — Untitled Pixar film
