Gosh just reading this….it does help underline a big issue. Can I just say that we’re doing well across the pond at Screen International though. Wendy Ide, Lisa Nesselson, Sarah Ward are prominent reviewers for us and I’m running the reviews desk as well as working as Chief Film Critic, Nikki Baughan now helping me. We’re nearly 50 percent now across the roster internationally and I’m really happy with that — but I don’t think it has been hard to find great female critics. Not hard at all. It really does make you ask why. I’ve been looking for help in the US and was told that women critics are “rare” there so I was interested to read this article and, as a commissioning editor, I certainly appreciate all the helpful links it contains. (Thank you!). Can I also add that several (powerful) sales agents have told me how relieved they are to have certain films handled by women critics. The support is out there.
