My mother said the same thing to me when I started my current job. The problem is that when parents say this they think of “dues” as odd jobs that are not well paid but still important for a person’s development. They don’t think about all the people out there like your director who simply don’t see you as a person and treat you like a talking Rumba.
I ended up working for a person like that because I believed that even the negative aspects of this job were a necessary step to take (I had to “pay my dues”). It took me a long time before I realized that I wasn’t learning anything but I was actually being used. Hope that soon I’ll be able to run away from this job like you did.
