Very well said article! I am a trained documentary photographer. Received my BFA in Documentary Photography after studying for 5 years in San Francisco….all on film. Spend 5 years of my life in a darkroom and loved every single second of it! And yet, to finish my training and work in the world a documentary photography can be rather disheartening. There is a deep difference from that of Photojournalism and yet hard to quantify to most others. And yes, there are even different schools of thought to how documentary could or should be approached, as you spoke of. I personally believe giving my subjects money is crossing a line in documentary work, but I have done it as well. Though I tend not to use those images if they were taken in passing. For a deeper project I wouldn’t want money to exchange hands. And yet, you are correct in that photographer would have the opportunity to make money from those images, which you are correct, does not seem fair. It’s a challenging subject, but one that is worth fighting for and worth digging deeper into. I choose my topics of photography very carefully because I do become completely immersed within those worlds and yes, it’s difficult to truly bring light to those segments and images. But I’ll keep at it as well!
