A Point in Time: Homelessness in Lynchburg

On January 24, a group of people traveled through Miller’s Park early in the morning to find homeless people who had no place to sleep. This group of volunteers is called the Point in Time Count, and they help understand homelessness in the community, as well as determine how much government funding is required in each area. In 2017, there were 125 homeless people in Lynchburg, but the number dropped to 112 in 2018.
Legislation to loosen liquor by the drink law leads to sharp debate

On January 20, a bill was brought before the General Assembly that allows liquor by the drink sales in all Virginia localities (unless a locality chose to ban it). No county is actively supporting the bill, but businesses and local officials support the legislation, and they believe that the Federal government has no right to tell local governments what to do. One delegate explained that without the bill, cities, like Lynchburg are having trouble growing their businesses.
Sheriff: Martinsville man charged with intent to sell cocaine, marijuana

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Dominique Andre Richardson. As the state police issued a search warrant in his car, they discovered an undercover drug investigation. In the car, Rchardson possessed cannabis, cocaine and a firearm, so they are holding him at Henry County Jail.
