I am reminded of a story about Johnny Winter from the recent documentary. He was a heroin addict and alcoholic for many years. His family got him into a Methadone program. Eventually they changed the methadone dosages from pill form to gel capsule form.

One fine Christmas they gave him one of those box-within-a-box gifts. When he got to the final box there was what seemed to be one of his methadone pills in the gel capsule. When he asked them what is was about, they told him they had been slowly reducing the dosage of methadone in the gel capsules for quite awhile and the gel capsules he had been taking more recently had no methadone in them at all. He had kicked his habit without even knowing it.
