Nurse Burnout
Long Shifts leads to Nurse Burnout and Dissatisfied Patients
Long shifts, such as the 12 hour shifts leads to burnout among among nurses and hence leads to patients being dissatisfied with the care provided. When nurses take 12-hour shifts they have the opportunity to work three days in a week an that gives them(nurses) the opportunity to work more overtime hours and that leads to the burnout syndrome. This burnout syndrome does not only affect the nurse but it affects the whole healthcare system. Nurses are the ones that spend more time with the patient, so if they are burnout, the patients needs will not be met and, hence patients will not recommend the hospital to their families and friends and this can lead to crippling of the healthcare system. The video is from University of Pennsylvania and it was done by Amy Witkoski Stimpfel, PhD, RN.
This video is about a study conducted by Amy Witkoski Stimpfel, PhD, RN et al at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing . She talks about long shifts that are worked by nurses and its effect on the hospital. Dr. Amy Stimpfel explains that “extended work shifts of twelve hours or longer are common and popular among hospital staff nurses, and a new study reports that nurses working longer shifts were more likely to experience burnout, job dissatisfaction, and patients were more dissatisfied with their care.”
