Japanese dialect! ~ Kansai-ben ~

What’s kansai-ben?

As you know, Kansai-ben is a dialect used in Kansai area, but the dialects in each prefecture in Kansai are also different. Most Japanese people think Kansai-ben is originally from Osaka, so sometimes it’s called Osaka-ben.

How is Kansai-ben different from standard Japanese?

One of the biggest differences is the ending of a word.

Kansai-ben often puts ねん (nen) or やん (yan) on the ending of the word.

In Standard Japanese, these words can be です (desu) or じゃん (Jan).

The difference of the ending of the words is not only these styles. These are lots of styles in Kansai-ben. Also accent is very different from standard Japanese, but we’ll write about it in next blog!

Example:

りんごが好きです(Standard Japanese)

りんご好きやねん(Kansai-ben)

: I like an apple.

このりんごおいしいじゃん!(Standard Japanese)

このりんごおいしいやん!(Kansai-ben)

: This apple is delicious!

Common Kansai-ben!

なんでやねん(Nandeyanen): No way/How can that be? etc..

“なんでやねん” is commonly used for Manzai, which is a style of a stand-up comedy. However this word is also often used by ordinary people. I think there is no word to translate exactly, but if it’s translated, it can be “No way”, “How can that be” or something like these words. I personally think this word is the most popular Ksansai-ben!

ほんま(Honma) : Truth

“ほんま” is often used in Kansai area. If you want to say this word in standard Japanese, it’ll be “ほんとう”, which means truth.

Example

本当に?(Standard Japanese)

ほんまに?(Kansai-ben)

: Is it truth?/ Really?

おもろい (Omoroi) : Funny/Interesting

“おもろい” means Funny/Interesting in English. In standard Japanese, we say 面白い (Omoshiroi), but when it comes to Kansai-ben, It; going to be “おもろい”.

Example

この本はすごく面白い! (Standard Japanese)

この本ほんまにおもろい!(Kansai-ben)

: This book is very interesting!
