Consider why people in the past decided that it was a good idea to put up such statuary or memorials in the first place. These people were not saints.
Shall we go tearing down statues of Margaret Sanger because she was also very much in favor of Eugenic ideas? I think not. She did accomplish some good things. The same can be said for Thomas Jefferson. Yes, he owned slaves. He also helped to craft the very documents that were used to eliminate slavery.
People are a product of their time. They will have flaws. Expecting perfection from them decades or even centuries later with 20/20 morality from the modern era applied to them is the sort of crap that historical revisionists engage in all the time.
The question we should ask is what is motivating this revisionism now?
