One thing we learn as we get older is that we’re all flawed human beings. Those pretty young girls can turn ugly in the time it takes them to open their mouth and say something.

Conversely, a plain woman can become beautiful with manners, attentiveness, and care. My wife’s mother was such a person. She was very good at putting guests at ease with her lovely down-to-earth humor and openly honest talk without any blame or rancor.

And as my wife and I grow older, I see more and more of her mother in her. It’s actually comforting.
