Tell us about yourself and your background.

I was pre-med in college thinking I’d follow my dad and pursue a career in medicine or dentistry, which is of course why my first job out of college was running warehouse operations for a distribution company. I’d never set foot in a warehouse before then — logistics wasn’t even on my radar. Now, 20+ years later I can’t seem to get away from it.

I’ve spent the bulk of my career in and around warehousing, often with high-growth eCommerce and multi-channel retail brands — working for Overstock.com, Urban Outfitters, and Turn5 to name a few. I helped them scale their systems, facilities, and teams to meet and exceed ever-growing customer expectations. It’s an exciting and challenging space to work in because the solutions you design and implement today will likely not be sufficient over the long-term. There’s always good work to be done.

Logistics is pretty crazy when you think about all the things that have to go exactly right to get products to store shelves, let alone your front door.

What’s your role at FLEXE?

VP of Network Development. I work on the supply side of our business — leading a team that recruits warehouse operators to join the FLEXE network. Together, we’ve built the largest open network of more than 1,000 warehouses across North America.

Specifically, we help warehouse providers maximize their existing assets that may otherwise be unused, and we connect them to an entirely new market of buyers looking for warehousing and fulfillment services.

Why did you choose to work for FLEXE?

When I met Karl, our CEO, I was instantly sold on the category FLEXE was creating and the culture they were building. Having worked in logistics and retail, I understood the problems that FLEXE was trying to solve because I experienced them first-hand.

We’re collaborative and we want to see each other succeed. Each week brings a new set of challenges and I’m always impressed by the energy everybody brings with them each day.

What excites you most about the logistics industry?

Logistics is pretty crazy when you think about all the things that have to go exactly right to get products to store shelves, let alone your front door. It’s an essential component of the world we live in. Yet, few people realize the magnitude of the global logistics industry and the massive supply chain challenges businesses face today. It’s just now finally getting its share of the spotlight. I am especially excited about the way technology — both software and hardware — is transforming so many aspects of the industry.

What makes being on your team at FLEXE great?

We’re collaborative and we want to see each other succeed — that’s a common thread throughout our company. Each week brings a new set of challenges and I’m always impressed by the energy everybody brings with them each day.

“Dave is one of my favorite people at FLEXE. He’s smart, humble, asks great questions and is a lot of fun to work with. And, I can count on Dave to provide honest, constructive feedback.” — Ryan Morel, VP of Marketing, on working with Dave

How do you make time for your family/loved ones?

Our culture at FLEXE is very supportive of a good work-life balance. I don’t feel like I need to go to great lengths to create time to be with my family, and that’s always been the case at FLEXE. In turn, I feel empowered to put in the extra time when the work requires it.

What is one unexpected source where you’ve found inspiration?

I often ride my bike to work, and the views around Seattle are spectacular. It’s the only time of the day that’s completely interruption-free. I have the space to think about work, home, or what’s next on my to-do list without a call or email interference.

As a company, we’re trying to solve some big challenges in our industry, which brings both tremendous highs and a fair share of frustrations. It’s important to stay grounded, focus on what’s real, and keep trying to get better.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I made a cameo appearance in a documentary (#9 at 8:03) about the life and career of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I’m sure you’ve seen it.

Other than that, I love to play a little guitar now and then and belt out some Johnny Cash.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I love camping and there’s no better place to do so than in the Pacific Northwest. The opportunities to explore are endless.

At home, I grow a vegetable garden each year with our kids. It’s a highlight of the spring — we love getting into the dirt and growing a little bit of food to put on the table.

My kids — Bryce, Jack, Stella, and Ruby — getting our garden ready.

What organizations are important to you and why?

Our family supports Life House, an organization that provides services for pregnant women and new mothers. My mother was passionate about helping mothers and children in need, and this is our way of sustaining her mission.

If you had your own personal warehouse and could fill it with any one thing, what would it be?

Patagonia Fleece Jackets (Size Medium). I get a little OCD when it comes to jackets — I just need them to fit and last a really long time. A warehouse full of them would spare my wife.

What fictional character would you be and why?

Indiana Jones. He travels light, gets it done, and never takes himself too seriously.

What’s your favorite buzzword or phrase and why?

“The truth is always somewhere in the middle.” As a company, we’re trying to solve some big challenges in our industry, which brings both tremendous highs and a fair share of frustrations. It’s important to stay grounded, focus on what’s real, and keep trying to get better.
