The 6 Most Incredible Benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred

For many people that are new to using credit cards to gain travel rewards, they are overwhelmed by all of the choices. When just beginning, it’s sometimes hard to justify the large annual fees of the premium credit card options out there like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the American Express Platinum. With a low annual fee ($95), a high sign on bonus (60,000), and a low minimum spend ($4k in the first 3 months) the Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great option for someone who is just getting used to the idea of traveling for free!
The benefits of this card far outweigh the $95 annual fee. Although I don’t recommend it because these points can have far more value — you can covert the points you earn into cash back to cover the $95 fee.
The following are what I consider to be the the 5 most valuable benefits. Click on the link at the bottom to find out all of the benefits that come with this card.
- 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points as a sign on bonus when you spend $4,000 in the first three months. At 1.25 cents per point, this is valued at a minimum of $750, however if you transfer the points to an airline or hotel partner it could easily be worth more!
With more than 10 transfer partners, Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) are some of the most flexible points out there. This in turn makes them more valuable than branded credit card rewards like an AmEx Delta or a Hilton Card. You can either transfer these points to one of the Chase Transfer Partners listed below or you can use them directly from the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal. If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred you will always get 1.25 cents per point when redeeming through the portal.

2. 2X points on travel and dining worldwide
Earn 2X points on travel and dining at restaurants-from airfare and hotels to fine dining and cafes. Plus, earn 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
Before discovering travel card rewards I always used a cash back card. I earned a lot of cash back rewards at 1 point per dollar. When I learned I could be earning double that, I was happy to hop on board!
3. Travel Cancellation/Interruption Insurance
If your trip is canceled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations, you can be reimbursed up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, including passenger fares, tours, and hotels.
We had recently booked our trip to Aruba when John got his cancer diagnosis. We are confident that we won’t have to cancel this trip, but we booked it with our Sapphire card, so we weren’t stressed about the possibility of canceling the trip and losing all of the money.
4. Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to the actual cash value of the vehicle for theft and collision damage for most rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.
The cost of your rental car can quickly jump to more than you planned on paying if you add on the rental companies collision insurance. We always decline their coverage and use a card that has primary rental car insurance.
5. Baggage Delay Insurance
Reimburses you for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing for baggage delays over 6 hours by passenger carrier up to $100/day for 5 days.
Have you been one of those unlucky people who an airline has lost your bag for a few days? If you book your trip with the Chase Sapphire Preferred you can use it as an opportunity to get a new outfit :-O!
6. Trip Delay Reimbursement
If your common carrier travel is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, you and your family are covered for unreimbursed expenses, such as meals and lodging, up to $500 per ticket.
When we were younger (before kids) if our flight was delayed we would spend the night in the airport to avoid spending any extra money. One time we snuck into a closed airport restaurant so we could sleep on the booth benches…we got kicked out a few hours later by security. The last time we were delayed overnight we had our kids with us and didn’t want to deal with tired kiddos so we got a room and went to dinner. By the time we got on the plane the next day we had spent an extra $200 that was not part of the plan and didn’t even get to do anything fun! A delay is always less stressful if it’s not going to cost you a bunch of extra money.
Once you get your card you can refer your friends and get 15,000 extra Chase Ultimate Rewards with each friend that uses your referral link! Please use mine if you decide this card is right for you.
