Nice piece Hennessy and quite in depth too. If academia is going to adopt ‘identitarian’ as the next label to part ways from post modern individualism, then there will have to be a bit more clarity for the mainstream to understand this discourse without tying themselves in a knot. Likewise, when political discourse starts to mutate into a far left / far right crossbread, the values behind semantics and quick meme microblog retaliations tend to get messy. Aftermath usually entails a bunch of people reflecting at the mess wondering how things escalated so quickly. Usually the cause can come from ingrained microaggressions and infights that the left has amongst itself. Though it’s more plausible to observe is the semiotics and comms style with the usage of values, phrase and tone that can differ greatly between the left and right echo chambers. For instance, you say ‘tamato’ and I say ‘tomarto’ like you say ‘Liberal’ and I say ‘liberal’. I’m the kind of person that would rather let go of clear distinctions between left and right politics but I’m aware of how individualism has led us to a point where we get lazy / disenchanted with the meaning of our words and labels. Anyway wankedy wank wank indeed. I’d rather see this energy fuelled towards a purpose like improving online political discourse.
