Research suggests that the gap between genders in infidelity is shrinking.
Although social norms and Hollywood portrayals often depict men as the sex more likely to cheat, studies show that the infidelity gender gap is narrowing — especially among younger people. Consider, for example, the findings of a study by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University which found that, in the study of participants with a mean age of 31, “there were no significant gender differences in the report of infidelity (23 percent of men vs 19 percent of women).
There’s also an analysis by the National Opinion Research Center’s General Social Survey (GSS) from 2018, which revealed that women aged between 18 and 29 were more likely to commit adultery than men of the same age (11 percent. 10 %). Additional data from the GSS found that the percentage of women who have cheated rose almost 40 percent between 1990 and 2010, while the male rate of adultery increased to 21 percent.
We will explore the reasons women are prone to cheating — including the most prevalent reasons behind their infidelity, and offer advice to assist you in avoiding the painful incidents in your relationships.
Why Do Women Have Affairs?
Some have attributed the recent increase in cheating among women to the growing responsibility (and increasing needs and desires) of modern women. With feminist views and the ability to make their own decisions, women tend to be less inclined to compromise and more likely to pursue the sexual and emotional fulfilment that they aren’t getting in their relationships.
“The gap shifted when women went to work and had their own money and choices; with choice comes easier dissatisfaction,” says the therapist for marriage and sex, Angela Skurtu, M.Ed, LMFT. “We also expect more from marriage today. In the past, marriage was a means to have a family and take on financial responsibility. Nowadays, we want satisfaction, good sex, the best of friends, and much more. We have placed much pressure on a marriage, even though it wasn’t intended to fulfil all of your requirements.”
