Pride Montreal and Black Lives Matter
Pride commissions articles saying #BlackLivesMatter, but dislikes Black Lives Matter when they do something.
It’s true that a moment of silence is important. However, in my opinion, it’s even more respectful of the memory of deceased people to ask for more, to push people to action, to refuse sitting on our laurels.
It’s true that a moment of silence is important. But people who are alive today are also important, and we should listen to them.
It’s true that a moment of silence is important. But nothing’s preventing you from having your moment of silence after Black Lives Matter’s intervention. As far as I know, waiting five minutes isn’t the end of the world, and if sticking to the schedule is more important than a moment of silence, that moment of silence wasn’t all that important to start with.
So let us listen to Black Lives Matter, even if it means delaying our moment of silence. Let us listen to them, and let us honour the memory of our deceased by refusing to let more people suffer.
Symbolism should not take precedence over suffering.
