A few months ago I experienced something very similar. After talking with a friend about a product I have never heard of at a bar, I began seeing ads for this product on Facebook.
The friend was researching the product online and my best guess is that FB started to show me ads for it after it detected we spent a few hours in the same place. It probably shows you a lot of stuff that your friends are interested in, but when you are not talking about these products you don’t realise that.
It’s equally likely that it doesn’t even need location to do this. My friend and I wrote in Messenger to coordinate meeting up and FB could use number of interactions to determine close friends in its ad engine.
