Step up against FIFA
With a simple thing everybody can do
If you are following the news I don’t have to tell you about the protests in Brazil. You already know all the evil things the FIFA does. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about watch John Oliver, have a laugh and be disgusted at the same time.
Alright, now you say: “Enough is enough. I’m so angry right now, I wan’t to teach those evil people a lesson”. But what can you do? The FIFA doesn’t seem to care about anything, hell, they even don’t care about 4.000 people that might die while constructing the stadiums in Qatar.
I will tell you something they care about: Money. Now the FIFA makes most of it’s money by selling licenses to television etc. and you could hurt them by not watching the World Cup, but I’m not going to propose that. No, there might be another form of protest, that takes only little effort.
A lot of the money also comes from sponsors. Large brands like Cola Cola or McDonalds. And these sponsors are important for the FIFA. In fact they are so important that they are willing to pressure politicians to change laws in favour of their sponsors.
The sponsors, they care a lot about how people see their brand. All the money they put into the World Cup is an investment in their image. The sponsors hope that some of the Cups glory spills on them. Because of the bad press the FIFA had lately the sponsors are already uneasy, they start to fear that some FIFAs bad image might stick to them.
Let’s turn that fear into reality. I propose the following: Over the course of the 2014 World Cup don’t buy any product of one of the offical sponsors. This isn’t about the sponsors themselves, no problem, just drink Pepsi and go to Burger King during the World Cup. They are only the ones delivering our message: FIFA, you have to come clean. And if they see their sales dropping, they are going to deliver that message with force.
Now there is a catch (there always is): This will only work if we get A LOT of people on board. And by a lot, I mean so much that there is a significant drop in sales for at least some of the sponsors during the Cup.
But you know what the beauty of this protest is? You can still enjoy the World Cup. You can meet with friends, drink beer and eat burgers. You just have to make sure they are from the right brand. (Here is the list of official sponsors)
So if you are with me, spread the word. Share this article, or write your own one. If we are successful, we will all see it on the news after the games.
