Studies Find Positive Correlation Between Anxiety And Intelligence
The common saying “ignorance is bliss” may not hold true for certain situations but when it comes to anxiety, being ignorant about things that can stress one out can turn out to be a blessing. When people stop focusing on the negativities of life and instead delve on the positives it can go a long way in saving someone from the clutches of anxiety and depression. However, this does not mean that even though one is diagnosed with anxiety, he or she keeps ignoring the symptoms until it develops into a full-blown anxiety disorder.
Dealing with anxiety is tough as it makes an individual incapable of performing normal tasks due to persistent feelings of panic and fear. In extreme situations, an anxious person may experience other problems as well such as trouble in sleeping, breathing problems and an inability to stay calm. While it is normal for people to consider the debilitating symptoms of anxiety as the main culprit behind their low life condition, it is far more difficult to comprehend that even anxiety can have certain positive aspects, provided it is in a mild form.
Studies have shown that anxious people may have a higher IQ or more intelligence than many others.
Identifying the link between anxiety disorders and higher intelligence
Thinking too much about a particular situation is linked to several side effects, such as muscle tension, sleep deprivation, fatigue, irritability, etc., however, sometimes people with more angst tend to display higher intelligence and IQ. If an older study, conducted by Israeli psychologists is to be believed, there is a positive correlation between anxiety and intelligence. For the study, the researchers tested 80 students at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya to evaluate the link between anxiety and the ability to complete the assigned task. Surprisingly, the participants who were found to be immensely anxious were the ones who crossed each hurdle and were more determined to complete the task.
In another study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, in 2015, researchers evaluated a total of 126 undergraduate students at the Lakehead University in Canada to assess whether ruminating minds are more intelligent. As part of the study, the researchers presented a series of questionnaires to each participant, and then, determined their scores accordingly. Surprisingly, students who had suffered from general anxiety disorder (GAD) or depression had higher verbal intelligence.
Excessive anxiety can be detrimental
Excessive anxiety can lead to a plethora of problems such as physical and mental health issues or impaired relationships, among others. Though anxiety-related disorders are the most common psychiatric condition in America they are generally overlooked by doctors due to various reasons, one of them being a lack of awareness.
It is important to consult a physician at the earliest for the evaluation of anxiety-related disorders so that proper remedial measures can be taken. With nearly tens of millions of Americans getting afflicted by mental disorders each year, the need of the hour is to understand the risk factors and seek professional help immediately.
