5 tips if you reach the end of your contact list.

Every direct seller will come to the end of her list. It’s a hard reality to face. But, it’s not the end of your business. What do you do when you come to the end of your contact list? How do you continue to move forward? Here are a few steps to be sure you don’t stay stuck.

  1. Make sure you’re actually at the end. Sit down with several pieces of paper and put headings on them. The headings will be something like “moms from Girl Scouts.” “Parents from 3rd grade class.” “Moms from dance.” “Bible Study friends.” “Neighbors.” Make sure you’ve covered every area of your life. Then just start listing names. Are there any names you left off your original list that you can add now? Is there anyone you’re super scared of asking? Put a star by her name. Then when you start making calls…call her first.
  2. Go back over your original list and see if there was anyone you didn’t completely follow up with. Did you kind of mention your business to her at the park, but never talk about it again? That doesn’t count. She needs a call. Did you call her once and leave a message and never follow up? You can still call her. Sometimes we stop short because we don’t want to “bother” people. Remember, though you’re making hundreds of calls, she’s only receiving one. She has no idea how long you’ve been on the phone, how many yeses or no’s you received.

  1. Let’s assume you’ve actually, really talked to every person you know. Well…it’s time to go meet new people. This is going to be different depending on what you sell, but people are literally everywhere. If you love what you do, if you love your product, it’s perfectly fine to share it with them. Consider sharing a booth at a craft show with another consultant/representative. Do you know someone who sells a complimentary product? You could split the cost and the size of the booth. State fairs, bridal shows, summer festivals and church fundraisers are everywhere all the time. While at the show, give every one the option to enter a drawing for a tempting product. When you leave you’ll have a pile of new leads! Bring people to your booth with cookies or cold water if it’s hot. Another way to get new leads is to call your best hostesses and friends and just ask for help. Give her something for referring 5 or 10 friends.
  2. Try to make sure you don’t end up at the end of your list in the first place. You must book future appointments at every single party or show. If you don’t book on the spot have the guests give you the names and phone numbers of 2 or 3 people they’d like to treat to a $5 gift card. You can call, offer your service and let them know their friend so and so wanted them to have $5 off their in person purchase. You’ll have to reward the referrer as well. Perhaps for every name entered they go in a drawing for something free or a discount at the show.
  3. Always keep in mind that your business depends on growth. Make great first impressions, dress professionally, use your own product and smile. Be a people magnet so that you don’t ever get to the end of your list, but remember if you are there it’s not the end. You must not give up.
