Review: I think Mark did an excellent job of both recording Dr. Lisieski’s more reachable insights as well as the sacrifices that he paid for along the way due to something that really a lot of us face, if not throughout the path at least early on, which is ambition to excel without a full purification or exorcism of the pain that drives us to do so. It seems like pain can drive a lot of people to meteoric success but the ‘meteoric’ part is just that.In his lectures Mark is fond of bringing up, often, that no one comes to the occult path on pure intentions. I would agree with this in my own case — ie. my desire to make my own life better had a great deal of pain driving it, and in truth I’ve spent the last three or four years in various forms of shadow work burning that off on the treadmill. It seems like as we attempt to climb the Tree of Life we’re asserting increased leverage over what’s within us and if any of the timber is rotted or if there’s anything untoward lurking in the cellar, basement, catacombs, or even closets of our psyches those secrets will pick up as much escalation as our best aspiration — ie. it’s a great recipe for madness and ill health unless you’re applying constant self awareness and asking yourself important questions about what you need to further fortify your own emotional and mental states.I think Mark nailed it though in the appendix — situations like Dr. Lisiewski’s aren’t the rarity but the norm. In that sense I think it’s a mirror we can all hold up to ourselves. I think one bit of personal insight I’ve gained as well, from being in a few orders over the years, is that most people who come to the path also join in such a breach of social conformity (ie. practicing magic, let alone learning anything about it) because they feel cut lose and in some way they’ve come to a deep sense that society has broken its contract with them. I think that’s part of why this is such a prolific issue and rare, as well as of a rare sort of spiritual and mental development, are the kinds of people who come to this path as fully formed and healthy adults. That’s not a bad thing, just an important note that we always have to eye ourselves with a great deal of humility and avoid scholastic or performative pissing contests for exactly what they are — ie. a distraction from what the magical path really is, ie. a conversation and contest with ourselves rather than our peers.

Review: I have met people who lionized Dr. Lisiewski and those who spit upon the mention of his name. He was certainly a divisive figure in occultism. I was eager to read this book for a greater perspective on a man about whom I wanted to know more. How could I not? The man was said to have produced excellent results with magic, didn’t suffer fools in his life and, above all, was a fellow Pennsylvanian which only made it cooler to me. For sure, his direct and objective approach to evocation and focus on the spirits as real and beings that you can summon into physical manifestation is a view I share and that has been confirmed via my own practice and those of other grimoirists. On the other hand, many of his proponents still spoke of him being a difficult person at the best of times. Also, some of the views he held stand in opposition to my own. It was impossible for me not to look into the truth behind this!Mark Stavish has penned a book that not only gives a sobering and honest account of a magician he considered a friend, but also a deep look into the pitfalls of how magic can enhance one’s personal flaws and how easily we can be trapped by them. Learning more truths about the man who is the subject of this book has given me pause to reflect on the nature of the work as a whole and the greater need for balancing practices in one’s life if one is to walk more cthonic paths in magic. To this end, Stavish’s other books can help greatly while not taking away from one’s ability to tread on the darker side of magic, as it were.All-told, any student who wishes to engage in the study of influential practitioners and their lives will benefit from the revelations this book holds within it.

Review: I just finished reading this book, and while I’m still digesting some of it (as there a bit of a shocker toward the end) my feeling is that it was well presented. The truth is laid out without a lot of fuss, plenty of history, and just the right amount of compassion and respect for the family. A very sad story that’s well written and contains some solid lessons on what to do and not to do on the path.
