The Chinese Peony, also known as the “minister among flowers,” is a perennial herb from the peony family, under the order of Paeonia. Its tuberous roots, which are fleshy and robust, grow in a spindle or columnar shape, with a thickness ranging from 0.6 to 3.5cm.
The petals of the Chinese Peony are ovate and its floral disc is shallow cup-shaped. It typically blooms in May and June, with flowers generally appearing at or near the top end of the stem. The original species of peony bears white flowers with 5 to 13 petals.
However, horticultural varieties offer a rich array of colors including white, pink, red, purple, yellow, green, black, and multi-colored, with a flower diameter of 10 to 30cm and petals numbering up to a hundred.
