Having been in this design game as long as IDEO, (my brother’s firm was a neighbor to the Palo Alto studio) I always have to consider where and how race and non-traditional participants will adhere among the seven challenges, particularly when “collaborating” in the fields of education, environmental justice — all while addressing class & poverty. If we are to fully address these assignments as designers, we have to see the uncomfortable details of who has say, and who gets use. Among others, I recommend Aldon Morris’ new book “The Scholar Denied: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology,” as you broaden the thinking and technologies behind a designed world. There are many of us who exist in the design and innovation industry, where the pathways bypass and circumvent.
