Have you ever wished learning could be more engaging and interactive, especially for kids?

Well, guess what? It can be!

Growing up, our learning experiences were mostly confined to classrooms. While textbooks and lectures served their purpose, they often lacked the interactive spark that could truly ignite a child’s curiosity. Oppia is changing that by providing a platform where kids can learn through engaging stories and activities.

Oppia is a free online platform bursting with interactive lessons that make learning fun for kids across various subjects. ‍

Unlike the textbooks of our past, Oppia uses engaging stories and interactive activities to spark curiosity and keep kids glued to the screen (in a good way!).

Taking Oppia to the Classroom

I had the amazing opportunity to visit Mayday School in LSDPC, Isolo, Lagos on the 19th of March 2024 to introduce Oppia to a class of 17 pupils. I had initially met with the Headmistress the past week to talk about the possibility of the school partnering with Oppia, I knew Mayday School from my banking career and to be able to work with them again for a different project was exciting.

The kids in the class were a mixture of boys in girls and were super receptive and eager to explore. To gauge their understanding of the lesson I was going to teach them, I took a sample of 5 children and did a quick pre-test before taking the class on a lesson on place values in math.

The Magic of Interactive Learning

The lesson itself was a blast! the place value lesson story was easy to understand and made easy for the kids to follow. They were very engaged and followed the lesson from the beginning to the end. We even had a post-test afterward, and the results were positive — the kids learned a lot!

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Miss Naya! Can I use my tablet at home to continue today’s lesson?

The best part? Many students were excited to keep learning with Oppia at home. Because the session was held during the exam period I only had the time to take the class on one chapter in place value, but I encouraged them to complete the lesson when they got home, One of the girl children even asked if she could use her tablet at home because I had used a laptop to take the lesson.

Thankfully, Oppia offers both a web app and a mobile app (that works offline!), making it accessible to everyone.

At the end of the session the headmistress pulled me aside and said she liked the way I engaged the children, she had popped in during the session to see how the kids were responding. She also confirmed that they would definitely be partnering with Oppia because she liked how the children interacted with it.
