Pivot tables are one of the most powerful features in Excel, allowing users to summarize, analyze, and visualize large data sets quickly and easily.

Tip 1: Prepare Your Data: Make sure that your data is properly cleaned and does not contain any blank cells, as this can cause errors in your pivot table analysis. Also, ensure that your data is sorted in a logical order, such as by date or product.

Tip 2: Convert your Excel Data into an Excel Table: If you consistantly get new data, this will ensure that your pivot table reflects the latest changes in your data set without you having to modify the pivot table data range/source data settings manually.

Tip 3: Combine and Transform Your Data: This is a Power Query feature that enables us combine multiple Excel files into one. Do this for all files containing the same data and having the same column names. E.g 2019 Sales Data, 2020 Sales Data, 2021 Sales Data, 2022 Sales Data can all be combined if they have the same type and number of columns.

Tip 4: Load your Data Tables into a Data Model: Data models allow you to easily create relationships between your data tables (most especially in they contain different data but related by a just a variable/column), e.g employees data table containing all employee data and department table containing just department information. Data models can also improve the speed and efficiency of your data analysis by allowing you to work with large data sets without having to copy all the data into a single excel sheet, enforcing data integrity rules and preventing inconsistencies or errors that may occur when writing complex formulas.

Tip 5: Create your Pivot Table from the Data Model: This will create a pivot table for all the files you have added to the data model connection.
