Maybe it’s not so simple

I love TED Talks. Dan Barber’s “How I fell in love with a fish” is one of my favorites. His candidness and humor make his story even more compelling and easy to digest despite the very serious issue he is addressing.

As a college student on a budget, it’s easy to forget where my food comes from, and I’ll admit that sometimes it’s easier to go for the lower-cost option versus locally-sourced when I’m grocery shopping, not to mention that companies sometimes use deceptive labeling that make it hard to really tell where your food comes from — the farm-raised versus wild salmon debate comes to mind.

The great thing about TED talks is that they are presented in such a creative and entertaining way while informing you about important issues. When I first watched this TED talk I was amazed that such a solution exists to our fish farming problem. What is troubling is that this method hasn’t been implemented in other places despite its benefits. It makes me wonder if this method hasn’t been implemented becaue it wouldn’t be profitable to the governements or because it would hurt big corporations that currently control most of the farming and agricultural industries. I encourage you to explore the TED talk website and view more videos about food and other health related issues. Another issue that I’ve found TED talks to offer interesting videos about is fitness and exercise. There are several videos that talk about how American culture has led to the decline of exercise and health habits. So go ahead and explore the site. I’m sure you can find video you will enjoy.

I am also working on a research project about super foods and health food trends that I will incorporate some of my future blog posts. The project is meant to be a case study/research project about 15 pages in length. I am excited about it because its a great way to explore something I’m intersted in. I’ve always been interested in food and health, but as a business major it hasn’t always been easy to explore these areas in an academic setting. I’m especially intersted in how social media and led to the adoption of certain health trends. As a Millennial myself, it’ll be interesting to reflect and see how I feel like I’ve been influenced by social media. I currently follow about 20 health and fitness accounts on Instagram and they often take over my newsfeed. Sometimes I feel like they’re a bit overwhelming especially when I can’t work out that day or when I don’t have time to cook. The accounts are useful when looking for healthy recipes and for keeping me updated about cool health foods, but they can also be disheartening when I dont’ feel like I’m eating as healthy as I should. Hopefully my research will provide some guidance about how manage these accounts that I follow.

I hope you find the TED talk useful. Enjoy!
