How would you like your roasted duck to be served?

Slice, shredded or served with mashed potatoes?

Well, these are some of the ways it can be presented. However, this Chinese dish can be served in more creative ways!

A chef usually brings the whole roasted duck to the table in order to present it to the guests. Then, a live show where the chef finely cuts the duck meat will be performed right next to your table!

This flavorful and fatty duck is big enough for 4–5 people to enjoy a feast. Traditionally, duck won’t be served as only one dish. Many Chinese restaurants will present one duck to you in three ways for you to enjoy. My mouth is watering when thinking about the roasted being brought to my table. So, Garson, please bring us our first dish!

First Dish — Peking Duck Burrito

The chef carefully holds his knife, slices through the crispy glazed duck skin into the juicy meat.

He makes sure each slice is just about 1cm thick and each piece has a layer of crispy skin attached to it. A snow-white wonton wrapper(which is very similar to soft flour tortillas if you are a taco person) is placed on a wooden cutting board. The chef then starts assembling the colorful ingredients. The juicy, brown duck meat, a short carrot stick, a shredded scallion are all wrapped into the soft wonton wrapper. The size of this duck burrito is small; you could probably finish it in one or two bites. But the best thing is — — you have the taste of roasted duck, crunchy veggies and wonton tortillas blended and melted together with fragrant, pungent hoisin sauce all in one bite. There is no doubt that you will grab more mini burritos after your first try.

Second Dish — Minced Duck In a Lettuce Wrap

Wow… I had never tasted this unique dish at any other restaurants before! I was amazed by the creativity of the chef. It is a modification of a famous dish, “Minced Shrimp In a Lettuce Wrap.” Roasted duck meat does bring out the sweetness of all the minced veggies in this dish! The dish has brought together colorful, crunchy and fresh minced veggies including carrot, celery and water chestnut which is like a symphony in your mouth. To add extra crunchiness, Chinese donuts(which are bread sticks) are deep fried and chopped into small pieces as a side. How do you serve yourself? First, you take one lettuce cup. Top it with a spoon or two of minced duck meat medley. Then, sprinkle some Chinese croutons on top. Voilà! Your minced duck lettuce wrap is complete. Let the party in your mouth begin!

Third Dish — — Roasted Duck Porridge

As my group enjoyed the first and second plate of our delicious roasted duck, we thought we polished off most of the meat from this decadent duck… What would be our third dish?

The best part about presenting you three ways to eat a roasted duck is, the chef shows creativity and uses almost every aspect of the duck. Yes, the bone broth is going to play a key role in the Roasted Duck Porridge.

After removing most of the meat off the roasted duck’s bones, the chef puts these duck bones, chopped green onions and a few slices of ginger in a soup pot and brings it to a boil. To add extra flavor, he adds some dried shitake mushrooms to the broth while it is simmering. After the flavory broth is ready, rice and the last few pieces of shredded duck meat are added into the mixture. This warm and satisfying porridge will keep you full!

I love this last dish as much as the previous ones. Not only does the porridge taste good, but also it respects the life of the animals by not wasting any part of the duck that is edible. I hope you will get a chance to enjoy these three ways to eat roasted duck as I did!
