Interestingly, the dictionary (still, but who knows how much longer) lists “safeguard” as a synonym for conserve (the source of the word, conservative.) This indicates a preference for a state of unchange. Funny choice, for people determined to change everything. (Or at least, everything not providing them with maximum financial profit.)
