The process that produced fossil fuels took place over hundreds of millions of years. Plants grew, died, were compressed, and formed coal (etc.) over countless eons, repeated for perhaps a billion years. Yet we extract the results of a process perhaps requiring up to a billion years, and consumed it in essentially one human lifetime. This releases harmful gasses at a speed hundreds of MILLIONS that of the rate found in nature!
