Football Flick fits the bill for Man City’s academy programme
The Football Flick Urban Skills Trainer has been used in the Manchester City academy for two years now and we thought we’d catch up with the Head of Coaching for 6–12-year-olds Stephen Torpey, to see how the product was being used.
The Sky Blues’ academy has produced some gems in very recent years with the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho graduating from the Etihad Campus.
“The kids love them. Every time we get the Urban Trainer out you can see straight away that the boys are very excited to use them,” Torpey said.
“We can use it for a range of different ages and abilities, it just depends on what you’re trying to achieve from your practice. If we want to do some volleying practice then we tend to use the product for the older kids.”
Torpey then went on to explain why the Football Flick products were implemented into the Citizens’ academy, outlining the benefits to their technical programme and the practicality of the unit.
“The reason for using them initially was that it complemented certain elements of our technical programme and that it’s portable — you can store them well, they look good. There are many reasons from a practical point of view, but also the fact that it complemented a large part of our technical programme was the reason it worked for us.
“Using the equipment has certainly been a plus for us, our boys love using them and they’re durable. We change them on a yearly basis but if you think about them being used every single day in some capacity and at an elite level of adults, u18s, u16s, they last — and that’s something that’s also important.”
