Copa America 2024: Everything You Need to Know

The 48th edition of Copa America, South America’s biggest football competition will be played in the United States this year during Summer. Football fans will witness an extra event along with UEFA Euro 2024 as both competitions will run simultaneously in different Confederations. It will be organized by CONMEBOL and CONCACAF as teams from both Confederations will compete for the ultimate trophy.

United States to Host Copa America 2024

The United States has the responsibility to host the tournament. Earlier, Ecuador was expected to host the competition but the nation declined to host and the USA became the hosts of CA2024 on 27 January 2023. This is the second time that the USA will host it after hosting the Copa America Centenario in 2016.

After two years, the United States will also host the next FIFA World Cup along with Mexico and Canada. So, the nation is set to host 2 big football tournaments in 2 years.

The first match of Copa America 2024 will be played on 20 June 2024 at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The final is set to be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. All matches will be played in 14 cities in the United States.

Qualified Teams of the Competition

16 teams from both Confederations will play this edition out of which 10 are from CONMEBOL and 6 from CONCACAF. The 6 teams from CONCACAF qualified through the 2023–24 CONCACAF Nations League. The United States, Jamaica, Mexico, and Panama have qualified and the remaining two teams will be decided by the CONCACAF play-offs. The Qualified teams are

Groups of the 2024 Copa America

For the group stage of the competition (1st round), a draw was organized to decide the groups on the 7th of December 2023. For the draw, 4 pots were made and teams were placed according to their rankings. From each pot, a team was drawn and until the last team from the last pot. The groups are:

  • Group A: Argentina, Peru, Chile, and TBD
  • Group B: Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica
  • Group C: USA, Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia
  • Group D: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and TBD

What is the format of the competition

In the group stage round, every team will play a single game against its group rival. In this way, every team will play 3 group-stage games against each other. 3 points will be given to the winning team and 1 point to each team for the draw. From each group, the top 2 teams will qualify for the quarter-finals. Don’t forget to check the schedule of Copa America.

The winner of each group will play against the runner-up of the other group. The winning team will qualify for the Semi-final, and then the final. Competition’s Mascot and Official Match Ball

The Match ball and Mascot for the South American Championship are also unveiled. Both symbols are designed with the competition’s colors and theme giving a special touch to the tournament.

Mascot: Just like the previous edition, a special Mascot has been unveiled that will inspire the fans during the tournament. The name of the Mascot is “Capitan” which means “Captain”. It is an eagle which is inspired by the different cultures of America.

Official Match Ball: “Cumbre” is the official match ball of the Copa America 2024 which is provided by Puma. Earlier, Nike used to provide the match ball for 20 years but in 2023, their partnership ended and Puma became the new partner. The ball was unveiled during the draw of the competition.
