Cowboys at Giants
Our trip to MetLife Stadium.

Last Monday, my wife and I went to see the Dallas Cowboys play the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands. It’s been several years since we had moved out of New York City, so this was part of a larger weekend trip. The Lyft driver took back roads from the hotel to the stadium, passing through old neighborhoods in New Jersey. The weather was overcast, gloomy, and cold. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but I really hope I never have to move back there.
Once at the stadium, I was impressed by how quickly we were able to get inside. It’s a newer stadium, constructed in 2010. I expected it to be filled to the brim with Giants fans, but instead, there were a remarkable number of Cowboys fans. Everywhere I looked, people were wearing Dallas’s logos. Nearly half the people there were Cowboys fans; the Giants didn’t have much of a home-field advantage. I grew up in Texas, so I’m a Cowboys fan; my wife prefers the Giants.
Our seats were behind the endzone, which is a strange way to view a football game. On TV, you’re mostly watching from the 50-yard line. Unfortunately for us, the action was hard to see when the game was at the far end of the field.
During the hour before the game, we saw some of the players practice and warm up. The most amazing part of the practice was to see Dallas’s kicker kick a 55-yard field goal as part of his practice.
Once the game got started, it was a lot of fun to watch. When the game was at the opposite end of the field, I watched along using the stadium’s massive screens. The quality of the play wasn’t great; several times, Dallas struggled in the red zone and had to settle for a field goal. Also, Prescott threw an interception on his first play of the game, which was rather disappointing.
The star of the game was a black cat. It ran onto the field late in the second quarter, stunning everyone. The referees called a timeout while the cat chased over the field, ran into the endzone, and dodged state troopers. It was hilarious. Eventually, the cat ran down a tunnel and disappeared.
Dallas played better in the second half and won the game. It was a lot of fun, and we’re very happy we went.
Escaping the Meadowlands proved very challenging. Lyft couldn’t get near the place, and all of the shady car service guys only wanted to go to NYC for a massive fee. We eventually had to take a shuttle to a nearby neighborhood and call Lyft from there.
