Demi Lovato hits nail on head
Demi Lovato knows the Kesha case is about so much more than just Kesha.
Lovato took a fair bit of stick when she questioned Taylor Swift’s decision to give Kesha $250,000 in her legal fight against producer Dr Luke.
A quick recap: Kesha claims Dr Luke subjected her to a decade of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, which led her to look for a way out of her contract with Sony Music. He counter-sued for defamation, and since then it’s all got very complicated.

In response to the donation to Kesha from Swift, Lovato tweeted on Monday (AEDT) the following, and the reaction from many was swift — no pun intended.

Clearly, Lovato didn’t articulate her message in the best possible way, something she admitted to in her Instagram post at the top. Lena Dunham has also highlighted how this case is about much more than Kesha in a piece on Lenny that is excellent.
“What’s happening to Kesha highlights the way that the American legal system continues to hurt women by failing to protect them from the men they identify as their abusers.”
So, bottom line — rather than highlighting a $250,000 donation to Kesha’s fight as the big story, what Lovato, Dunham and others looking a little deeper hope to help us see is there is a lot more at stake here.
