“Because I have this $5 and I can spend it on stories…”

Is this true? The closest I can find is “Essentially, we look at the engagement of each individual member (claps being the primary signal) and allocate their monthly subscription fee based on that engagement.” (from https://blog.medium.com/expanding-the-medium-partner-program-3be09dd146e4).

It doesn’t say if the “allocation” includes a chunk for Medium itself or if the entire $5 is going to authors of stories you clapped for (I highly doubt it). I’m ok with Medium taking a chunk for expenses, but I wish they’d be up front about how big that chunk is, instead of making us figure it out over time by looking at the payments we receive compared to the claps we get etc. And some sort of comittment to fairness (whatever that means) in terms of future changes to the allocation.

Is that too much to ask from a for profit company, albeit one that depends on the freely provided labor of its community?
